PROPOSITIONS
One of the features in Final Fantasy Tactics was the propositions that you could pick up at the local bars. They were side missions that warranted earning extra money, collectible treasures, and discovering unexplored lands. While the propositions themselves never warranted further benefits other than money and the Adventurer's title, in Prayers of Hersey we've included the propositions into having the rewards be functional.
If a party completes a proposition that entails discovering an unexplored land, then the map and the forums will be updated and expanded to include that new area. Granted, the unexplored lands are actually based off of locations from previous Final Fantasy games and technically don't really exist in Ivalice. However Prayers of Heresy is bending canon law on that aspect and actually weaving the locations into the map. The treasures gained will also reflect their in-game definitions. While some items are nothing more than valuable collector's items, some items such as materia will have added benefits within the game.
How do I find a proposition?
Check the Announcements board for when a proposition has been formally released. It will list the location(s) of where your character needs to travel in order to pick up the proposition from the designated Bar Tender. Please be cognoscente of travel times. If you're on the other side of the country then you might not make it in time to group up with others to take on the mission. A Bar Tender will only give the mission to one party at a time. Once assigned, other groups will have to either find other places to pick up propositions, or hope that the current group fails their mission and allows them to try their hands next at it.
The Bar Tender will always give a brief description of the type of job it is, and give their opinion on what kind of individuals would be best for tackling the objective if any apply. All of this interaction will be role-played out in order to maintain some level of intrigue and risk. It is up to the characters and their players to figure out if they are best equipped for the mission and have the right people to work with.
Please keep in mind that propositions are not available all of the time. The Administrator assigns random propositions to each of the Bar Tenders and then those staff members have a deadline to maintain followed by a 1 to 3 month break afterwards. This makes the propositions a sporadic and random occurrence as they are very time and attention-intensive for the staff members hosting them. Therefore the administration tries to give them an adequate resting period before they are asked to perform the task again.
Is this a solo or group event?
These side missions are meant to tackle as a group. It is best to coordinate with all of the players who wish to participate in the proposition and work out the details on assembling the party within the laws of travel time. The best place to do this is in the Plotting section. Sometimes propositions are best won by having certain types of individuals in your group, and keep in mind that each proposition has a varying difficulty level. It is not unheard of to fail your attempt as your characters work through the mission. The DM sets the pace, challenges, and difficult levels based on the assignment and who you have in your party.
Propositions also cost varying amounts of money in order to be permitted to take them on. Your party might have to share the tab in order to accept the mission, but the rewards are often very good, not to mention that completing propositions counts towards earning experience. Not to mention the fact that this gives various characters a reason to meet up and become acquaintances with each other. Maybe one expects payment for their services. Maybe it's kismet that a group of random strangers all come together and decide to work together for the sake of the reward or a common interest in exploration. It's a win for you either way.
What to expect when we accept?
Once you accept a proposition from the Bar Tender, follow their leads on where to go. From there the staff member associated with DMing the mission will utilize various NPC accounts to fire up threads for your team to enter and follow. From there it is up to your party to role-play through the challenges until you succeed or fail. The Bar Tender staff member will announce to you when your quest is completed. They will end the final thread of your mission with something like:
What happens when we succeed?
Your group gets to decide how you split up the reward if it is a material amount or item. For unexplored lands the administrator will eventually put the location up on the World Map and add a sub-forum to the boards so that people can now use that location to role-play further at their choosing. All members of the party will also be recognized for completing the proposition accordingly.
What happens if we fail?
Another party gets to try their luck. Your group and its party members will have to wait in line to try again, assuming that the others also fail the mission. If there are no other groups waiting to try the proposition then your party may try again. However they will have to scrounge up the fee again as well, if one applies.
